Hello Cynsie ! Welcome to the Community !

Manual placement means that you have selected a number of websites in the Placements menu.

Do you mean "automatic placement" like to let the system choose on what sites your ad to appear or automatic placement more like towards "automatic bidding", to let the system decide how much to bid on every placement from your selected list ?

If you mean the first choice, is enough to delete all your websites from the "Placements" list.

This page shows you how to edit and delete the placements

When the selected websites are deleted, your "context targeting" will rely on your other choices, like keywords, selected Topics or selected , Interests or the intersection of them if you select at least one from every category.

Read here about context targeting :

I would not advice automatic placement unless you have some specific keywords that can be found only on your target pages.

Also it would be good for you to explore the options from the Exclusion=category , to avoid unnecessary clicks :

Automatic bidding however is a setting in your campaign :

Thank you for your quick and succinct response - I'll give this a shot and let you know how it works!
BTW I was asking about automated placement - but as per your advice will stick with the manual and see how that works!
