Gclid for calls from ads

Does Adwords generate a gclid when a user calls us via a mobile call extension?

I am using a call tracking service and getting gclids on all of the calls that are originating from my website but not from the calls from call extensions.

Hi James,

Do you mean Mobile Click to Calls, under Campaign, Segment, then Click Type?

Or are you looking for something a little bit more detailed?

Let me give some more context about this question.  We currently capture the gclid from the URL and store it in the session when the user lands on our site from an Adwords click.

If the user converts via phone call or a form fill we are sending the gclid into our CRM along with the visitor information. If the lead becomes a sale we update the lead with the revenue value of the sale and take an export of all leads with a gclid (which are Adwords leads) and then import that data along with the revenue from the click into Google Analytics using the Data Import feature.

Google Analytics then reads the gclid and can attribute the revenue back to the correct campaign, ad group, and keyword that drove the lead.

When a user calls us using a call extension on our ad that is logged as a conversion in Adwords. The conversion name is "Calls from ads."

I want to know if there is a gclid created when a call extension is called so that we can capture it and send it to our CRM along with the caller ID information so we can later import to Google Analytics.

Does that help explain it better?

Hi James,

That certainly does help! It is far beyond where I can help you.

I'll leave this for another specialist to post and hopefully get you to the correct answer Smiley Happy

Did you ever get your answer? We are trying to do the same thing. Our crm is trying to wrap their heads around how to store gclid for calls. It's obviously easy to understand from a webform perspective.

The answer I got from Google was that a gclid isn't generated on a call
extension click. Callrail told me we can query their API to see if they
exist.

I havent tried the API yet but would be interested to hear your results.

My research since asking this question tonight is that gclid isn't needed
because the import file for phone calls (as long as they came from an ad
extension or dynamic website tracking) uses the originating callerID,
duration, start time, assigned value, and conversion name to import the
file into adwords. So no gclid is used.
