No you do not lose history, the Ad has a unique ID ( which you can see if you activate the corresponding column) and once deleted it is only hidden from the standard view setting, you can see all deleted ads if you want , and their history, just like for deleted keywords.

To add to scott's message,

When you edit any ad, it pops a window and it shows this message:

"Before you edit this ad...
Changing this ad will delete the existing ad and create a new one, which will be submitted for review. The old ad's statistics will still be visible in the total line for deleted ads."

Hi Scott,

Editing your ads is like deleting your old ads and creating new ones.

This will reset your new ad's performance statics to zero.
