Display Targeting

Visitor ✭ ✭ ✭

we used to target display ads two years ago and then we just used keywords and placements.

Now, it seems that Adwords doesn't allow us too just do keywords and placements.  Or am I mistaken?  Because it looks like interests and other topics are also included by default.  Is there any way of opting out of this feature?

Thank you very much for any help

Hi Paul,

Did you try following the steps mentioned in the link I gave in my prior post. Here's one screenshot for your reference:-

What do you mean by "we do that, but then get all the topics and web sites as standard". Pick "keywords" add your keywords, pick "placements" as your placements  and  then choose "target and bid"

Hi Paul,

You can customize and use your own targeting method which you want to inside the Display network campaign. How exactly are you trying to add the targeting method?

You just need to go inside the particular ad group, then go to Display Network Tab and click on Targeting to choose whether you want to add placements, keywords, topics etc...Find more details here: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/6056342?hl=en&rd=1

Let us know if this helps!

Thanks!

I tried that and I seem to get all sorts of categories and websites as default and they are all enabled. So I tried excluding them all instead but that is difficult to do with numerous adgroups. Am I missing something? Why is it turned on by default?

Hi Paul,

Which campaign type is it? Is it Search with Display select? In this case, AdWords uses automated bidding type. You don't have much control over Display Network.

Hi Pankaj

Really, it's just a normal Display campaign. As I said two years ago none of these features were standard and Google was just introducing it. I tried "excluding" all the categories etc but then I received no impressions on my placements and the keywords didn't really seem to help either!

I am a bit lost!

Right, we do that but then get all the topics and web sites as standard, do you not when you create an ad group? If we want to just have these two, why can't we? That's really my question. Try it for yourself and you will see that there's no option just to have those two you show above. Or is there?

Thank you ever so much!

I never was the best at explaining! Basically we tried doing as has been said, but then Google seems to add in websites that are absolutely of no interest to us. Two years ago, an adgroup for "red shoes" would generally give us shoe web sites, but now we seem to get sites for song lyrics and newspapers. It seems a much more broad based ad distribution whereas before we had highly targeted advertising. Maybe there's no solution to this now. When we exclude all the categories of sites that Google allows us, then we get no traffic whatsoever, whereas before we bought hundreds of thousands of clicks. We'll keep trying and revert! Thanks guys
