Display Ad Builder - What was your experience with this tool?

Couple months ago Pankaj, our Top Contributor, wrote a Wiki article on Image ads and their advertising banefits. He also mentioned implementation of images created in Display Ad Builder, an AdWords account built-in tool. This tool offeres many formats and types for the users to choose from.

If you've used this tool, what was your experience? How did you decide which format was the best option for you? Have you tried any of the seasonal templates?

I have used the Display Ad Builder several times for different clients and I think it´s a really easy way of producing a lot of image ads in different sizes in a very short time.

Not only does it reduce time in the process of producing ads, it also save time otherwise wasted because some other people (i.e. your clients bureau of some sort) is gonna do it for you and you have to wait for ads to be produced. And in worst case they are producing them without asking for your advice, and instead of a high-converting brand-building super ad you get something that a graphic designer thinks "looks good" but is not fitted for Internetmarketing at all.

So instead you can do it yourself with the Display Ad Builder in almost no time and at no cost and you can have image ads up and running very soon and within days have some numbers to show your client. If they look like "wow this is a trail we should follow" you might even get the authority to produce more and better ads, using more refined tools for that, and have something that you - the Internetmarketer - think is really efficient and can show even better results.

So why not use the Display Ad Builder yet again if it worked the first time? Because it´s template-based, and even though  there are some really good templates in it and you might be able to find some that suits your needs, in the long run you don´t want ads that look similar to maybe thousands of other advertisers around the world. Instead you want something that is customized for your brand, you website (colours, landing page content, message etc) and your purpose.

So even though the Display Ad Builder is a great tool, it is clearly limited when it comes to graphic design and if I may suggest something to improve it, it would be to include even more templates (many, many more) and if possible also increase possibility of customization, so that I can use it to create ads that are in line with my purposes and brand and that I can use also long term.

One BIG Issue that I have with the Display Ad Builder is that the Ad Builder/Google continues to misrepresent the URL display.  The Display Ad Builder CLEARLY indicates that your URL will show in your newly created ad when infact it WILL NOT.

When this issue was raised in the past, the answer was that No Advertisers/Users were EVER notified that their previously created ads that were approved and running were modified by Google.  It was also stated that they (Google) "Wanted to see how advertisers would react."

Unfortunately, alot of advertisers may still be unaware that their ads are not showing their URL as they were originally created.

The fact that the Display Ad Builder content continues to misrepresent to this day that the URL will show when it infact it Does Not show your URL boggles my mind.

Hi RPQuest,

Thank you for that feedback, as it's something I myself have heard in the past from advertisers.  I wanted to let you know I passed it along to our product specialist team and engineering team.  Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience.

I think with display ads, a best practice to utilize would be to ensure that all ads have a clear call to action button, and 2-4 lines of prominently displayed text, which help to improve click through rates.  I also believe using images of your products, colors that match your brand, and your logo, can help users make a more qualified decision about whether to click display ads can also provide functionality that text ads can't. Examples include the ability to interact within the ad, such as scrolling between images and tabs, and using video.

If you're pressed for time or do not have a lot of design experience, the display ad builder is an effective tool to use.  Again, as with a lot of AdWords features, I would not be afraid to use trial & error and discover what works best for your business.

Good luck, all!

Thank you, Momo, for passing on RPQuest's feedback.

@David_Precisera: I like your point to try it out and start with the Display Ad Builder first.

Hi momo,

Thanks for your reply and fowarding my concern to the appropriate area.

I'm hopeful that they'll allow everyone's url to show on the Display Network Ads as originally intended and not just delete the field when creating an ad.  At a MINIMUM, Google should advise users of ANY changes made to the advertisers' original ad.

Can you imagine if a newspaper arbitrarily removed an advertiser's location in their ad without telling them??

Again, thanks for your help in resolving this issue.

I think Display ad builder is a good tool, which can be used to create good movable image ads. I don't know designing and all but I think this is going to work for me. I will try this for myself. Kelvin
