Dest. URL

When I look at my Campaign Keywords screen, all fields have content apart from the Dest. URL which is blank. However, when I look at my ads they all show the correct URL which I set at the time of preparing the ads.

Can anyone tell me why the Dest. URL column might be blank and do I need to go in there and type in the correct URL for each keyword? Did I miss a check box or something when setting the ads up? I thought entering the display URL and the destination URL should do it.

Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi AmeriCam,

There are Ad Destination URL's and then Keyword Destination URL's.

If you are not using Keyword Level Destination URL's, you will not see data in that column.

You can read more about the different options here:  http://support.google.com/adwords/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2404246&from=116202&rd=1

Hope this helps!

Hi Tom,

Thanks for that.

I have read the information and possibly have a better understanding now. However, I am still not clear on how the different options really work. For example, in my ad if I set the target destination as 'page 1' and I have two key words, eg, "A" & "B" and I don't enter anything in the keyword destination cell, I assume anyone who clicks my ad will be taken to page 1. Now let's assume I change keyword "A" so that the destination becomes 'page 2'. Does that mean that if someone enters search word "A" and sees my ad and clicks it they will be taken to 'page 2' , while another person may be searching using word "B" and because I don't have a keyword level destination they will be taken to my original ad destination, ie. 'page 1'?

In essence, would it mean that a keyword destination URL takes presidence over the original ad destination URL, and therefore it might make sense to set the initial ad destination URL to the site URL and control all the specific page URL's from the keyword level?

Hi AmeriCam,

Thanks for your question. You got it spot on! Keyword level URLs will take precedence over ad level URLs. Keyword-specific destination URLs can help you improve the relevance of your ad because you can lead users directly to a page about that specific product or service. It is for this reason that AdWords will lead users to the specified URL for individual keywords. Just one thing to remember - in each ad group, your keyword destination URL must have the same domain as your ad display URL.

I hope this helps!

Rachel
