Control over Google Shopping / Product Listing ads

We're setting up a Product Listing campaign in anticipation of seeing how things pan out when Google Shopping becomes a paid listings site. Maybe we're missing something, but it seems like there isn't a lot of control or transparency over the ads (beyond grouping within the feed itself).

In particular, we'd like to know:-

- How to restrict paid advertising to products within one particular Merchant Centre feed, and is there any way to see and manually alter (i.e. select/deselect) which items within a feed are used or otherwise?

- How to restrict Product Listing ads to Google shopping only (i.e. we understand they can be shown elsewhere)?

- Are we still entitled to free adverts until Google Shopping becomes a paid service on June 11? If so, what gets shown for free and how do we know about it?

- How to know what our Product Listing adverts will actually *look* like (similar to the ad preview for other types)?

Thanks for any help.

Hello Nick F ! Welcome to the Forum !

- How to restrict paid advertising to products within one particular Merchant Centre feed, and is there any way to see and manually alter (i.e. select/deselect) which items within a feed are used or otherwise?

This article can help to create a campaign as granular as possible to the product and ID level.

- How to restrict Product Listing ads to Google shopping only (i.e. we understand they can be shown elsewhere)?

I think your products will show up in google search pages too.

https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/2634840

" Whenever a user enters a search query on Google.com relevant to an item you are trying to sell, Google will automatically show the most relevant products along with the associated image, price, and product name."

- Are we still entitled to free adverts until Google Shopping becomes a paid service on June 11? If so, what gets shown for free and how do we know about it?

I think no free adverts will be available after reading this

http://adwords.blogspot.ro/2013/05/shopping-global.html

On June 11th, Google Shopping will complete the transition to a commercial model in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Brazil, Australia, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. When the transition is complete, free product listings will no longer appear on Google Shopping.

- How to know what our Product Listing adverts will actually *look* like (similar to the ad preview for other types)?

You can read an explanaition here :

https://www.en.adwords-community.com/t5/Improve-results/Product-listing-Ads-impressions-went-away/m-...

I think there is no preview option, after searching the help pages. This can happen because the products are chosen dinamically from the feed, and for every search there are other products "on display" , what you see now will not be the same with what is displayed 3 hours later .

Thanks for the article link; we'll take a look at that soon!

In reply to the other points:-

"I think your products will show up in google search pages too."

That was our understanding too. What we'd like to know though, is whether they *can* be restricted to Google Shopping pages only.

"I think no free adverts will be available after [June 11th]"

That's correct. However, the question is what happens to free ads before that cutoff date if one starts a campaign?

"I think there is no preview option [..] this can happen because the products are chosen dinamically from the feed"

While that's true, there's no reason (in principle) why one couldn't be shown sample adverts using typical or arbitrary products picked from the feed.

All the best,

- Nick F

In the mean time, you can try finding some answers "from the source" contacting google representatives for support with the means described here

https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/8206?hl=en&hlrm=en

There is a link with a full list of phone numbers per country.

Hi Nick,

Today is the day. No more free Product Search.

Excluding products is a piece of cake if you use a data feed optimization tool. You can create all sorts of rules to define which products (e.g. Christmas decorations in June, products with a low price, etc.) you would like to exclude from the feed that goes into your Merchant Center.

Check it out on this page: http://www.datafeedwatch.com/help/inexclude-fields/
