Call extensions missing

Don't know if anybody else is having this problem but the calls extensions I use on mobile ad have started misbehaving.  Sometimes they are there, sometimes they are not which is a bit irritating.  It all started sometime after 00:00 GMT on Tuesday 21st Jan.  Anybody got any ideas?

Hello Peter C,

Is your budget limited? Just some insights to extensions, they don't show with your ad everytime. So basically they will show some of the time the ad is impressed.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks very much for your insight.

We have not seen this behaviour before. We have some very well established
campaigns and we haven't changed the budget or any aspects of the campaigns
as they are working well with great CTR.

But I guess google may have changed something internally and not advertised
it ... it wouldn't be the first time would it!

The budget is not limitless but as long as the ROI stays positive within
reason I can make the budget what I want, so I'll jack it up and see what
happens.

Again thanks very much for you reply. Truly its appreciated.

Peter

So, when you are live searching you don't see either a click to call number, or a click to call button being displayed? I don't think call extensions ever show when using the preview tool still...

First of all, I would compare the click type segment and the ad extensions data to the total impression data. Break it down by time frame before and after to see if you can find something that stands out. DId you start acrruing more sitelink impressions on mobile devices over call extensions, for example?

What about average position per mobile devices? You have to rank high enough to accrue ad extension / call extension impressions. You say these are mature campaigns, perhaps the enhanced campaigns situtaion is starting to create a different marketplace now in Q1 2014, then even in Q4 2013 for your particular industry?

If phone calls are the goal, in this day and age of AdWords there are some different strategies you have to use, which, might not seem to fit "best practices". It may just be time to re-think things a bit, with a new goal/strategy in mind?

Yes that is correct, sometimes the ads are showing live with no extension.
This is completely "new" behaviour which started on Tuesday 21st.

I have looked at the stats and nothing obvious stands out other than that I
am getting more page impressions on my site and less calls, which is
completely consistent with what I have seen.

The campaigns are mature, they have been running for months. We are
positioned 1 or 2 generally on mobile with CTR of 10-15% (including mobile
call clicks), so pretty healthy. I try and avoid playing around with
campaigns that are working as well as these, so I have not touched a thing
since before Xmas. I can only think our pals at Adwords have changed
something.

Anyway I have been playing around to day and have made a few changes to see
if this makes any difference, as my old mentor said when all else fails
"poke and hope"

Thanks very much for your post, I really do appreciate that you took your
time to give some insight in to my problems.

OK, here's the real deal captain... What kind of call extensions are you using?

This is where it get's all kinds of complicated, unfortuantely... If you are using google call forwarding number call extensions, then, well.... How much time do you have? Two, three years? Smiley Happy

Yes, you are right - Something is... shall we say - Different, than it once was. The question is what?

What has changed....

It has something to do with the total budget for the account, if you make it bigger it happens less often but clearly this comes with its own downside.
