Hi, what is an effective way of building a keyword list from scratch? Adwords help section helps in understanding the concepts but I can't find much help when it comes to actual execution. The account is for an eCommerce start-up & we are just starting with our search campaigns.

Hi Akash,

Welcome to the adwords CommunitySmiley Happy

You can create a Good Keyword List by using Keywords Planner. It is google Internal Tool.
Where you can find the Keywords related to your product along with its Estimated Search Traffic. that will be useful for making the the list of keywords.

As You have mentioned that you want to run the Adwords Account for Commerce Portal.
So i would suggests create a Dynamic Search Ads Campaigns(DSA) without adding any keywords.

How it Works?

While creating the ads you need to define the Path in the Destination.

e.g abc.com/mens-wear/

when a users search on the google related to your product you Adwords will show your ads by generating automatic headlines.

in this way Adwords suggests you the a keywords list as well as it will show the longer headline that will be eye-catching.

i think good keywords are the ones that give you the most ROI. if you are to do it for 6 months you wont be able to find out which ones are the best after a few days. i think you will have to be patient.
another tip i think you can use is spy your competition and see which keywords they are using that you have missed. there are many websites that can help with that eg http://www.keywordspy.com/

Hi Akash,

First of all i would like to say that if you want to track which keywords is good/bad, you need to insert Conversion code on thank you page.

learn more about the conversion code:-

https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/1722054?hl=en

Than you can find the keywords that gives you conversion that is good for your business.

In addition to that you can also run Search Query Report(SQR) on weekly basis. SQR gives you the actual searches that has been performed by a users.

Learn More about SQR

where can exclude the term which are not relevant and add them as a negative in your campaigns or ad group, however you can also add some good keywords from the SQR as postive keywords in your campaigns.

Apart from that i would suggest please follow the below link where you can find how to optimize your keywords

Hi Rakesh,

Your post though informative, doesn't answer my question. I already know about keyword planner & dynamic search ads. What I want to understand is , after you pick your keywords, how do you do the optimization ? How to differentiate between good keywords & bad. How to do this on a daily basis. It is a question of daily execution with the end result(possible 6 months/an year) of an effective keyword list. Please help me with that. Thanks for your reply Smiley Happy

Hi Akash,

Without implementing anything in the account, you won't know whether it is going to work for you or not. That'y why Google has given different sort of tools to help advertisers find their valuable keywords. As you said you are already aware of the Keyword Planner Tool, then there shouldn't be second thoughts of execution from your end. You can enter your website to get the whole list of keywords. You can also enter different keyword match types and see how the global and local search volume of different keywords have worked in Google search.

You can also review Google Trends and see what kind of search queries are trending from one region to another.

http://www.google.com/trends/

Google Adwords is all about experimentation and you have to find out yourself by working and refining the account on regular basis which things work for you and which not.

As Rakesh talked about DSA above, you can also have the Product Listing Ads campaign (PLA), Remarketing, RLSA etc...So there's huge variety of advanced techniques which you can follow using Adwords.

Best of Luck!

Pankaj
