Broad match modifier shows up in the resulting ad - bug?

I've recently noted that when using modified broad match keywords with ads that use Dynamic Keyword Insertion in the final URL, the resulting ads actualy have the modifiers(+) inserted.

So for example if I use this keyword:
+cheap +cars

And this as final URL in the ad:
http://www.mysite.com/?search={keyword:cars}

The ad the actually shows up to users will have this as the final URL:
http://www.mysite.com/?search=%2Bcheap %2Bcars
(where %2B is the url-encoded version of "+")

This is obviously not desirable. Anyone else noticed this? Is this a bug?

Thanks for sharing the screenshot. Those are always helpful.

I don't believe that DKI is supported in final URL.  Even though it's not your intention, I believe it is being treated as the Value Track parameter, {keyword}.  Therefore it is showing the keyword that triggered the impression which matches the one in your screenshot.

I wasn't aware that you could do this in the final url.  I thought the {keyword} parameter in your final URL populates the keyword that triggered the ad and got the click, not the actual search query that was performed.

Hi Michael,

I think you're using the wrong Value Track value for a url. You would use {keyword:cars} in your DKI ad.

What do you see in Ad Preview tool for those keywords? Do you see the plus signs?

David K, you are correct. DKI insert the keyword that triggered the ad, not the actual search query.

Best of Luck!

Thanks for your answer

I'm not using Value Track templates at all, its the plain DKI. Here's the actual ad and results in a google search to better ilustrate the problem:

The Ad preview tool doesnt show final URLs unfortunately..

Ha yes I think you're right! It looks the same as DKI but it is actually ValueTrack when in final URL.

As per: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2375447?hl=en

These parameters can be part of your ad’s final URL, tracking template, or custom parameter.

I've been using it for years thinking it's DKI Smiley Happy Thank you for unraveling that for me!
