Automated Extensions? Sitelink on ad pointing to random other page on domain?

We had a really weird experience where an ad had a link below it that pointed to another page on the domain.

There was a similar relevance (keywords were similar), but the link pointed to like a blog post!

Very concerned about this for a couple reasons:

a) We didn't ask that to happen

b) Not a relevant link

c) Are we paying for clicks to this?

No idea how this happened... Has anyone every encountered this before and how would you field this?

Thanks

Hi @Drew C,

Automated Extensions in AdWords can show a variety of information, such as displaying dynamic structured snippets, dynamic sitelinks, previous visits and more.

You can disable Automated Extensions and prevent this from happening.

  1. Sign into your AdWords account.
  2. Click the Ad extensions tab.
  3. Click the “View” dropdown and select Automated extensions report.
  4. Click Automated extension options (advanced).
  5. Click Edit next to “Show all automated extensions for this account”.
  6. Click Exclude specific automated extensions for this account
  7. Check the box next to the automated extension you’d like to disable.
  8. Click Save.

If you still want to show ad extensions but have control over them, use manual extensions.

Kind Regards,

James

Following James and continuing to your last question.

Yes, you will be charged for any clickable ad extension whether it is manual or automated.

There's no cost to add extensions to your campaign, but you're charged as usual for clicks on your ad, as well as for certain interactions that extensions provide. For example, you're charged for clicking on a download button (app extensions), on a call button (call extensions), on a directions icon (location extensions), and so on. Clicks on review extensions and seller ratings are an exception: we don’t charge you for these. AdWords charges no more than two clicks (per impression) on each ad and its extensions.

The cost of clicks on extensions are set in the same way as headline clicks: the most you'll pay is what's minimally required to keep your extensions and ad position.

I think the core issue is that this happened without any notification.

AdWords needs to ask if we want to buy clicks to a different destination URL other than the one specified in the ad.

Understandable... how it could surprise you. Just use manual actions and everything will be in your control.

Kind Regards,

James
