If I create a Product Listing Ads campaign and create an auto target for all products and then create an auto target that say product_type=x would the x items only show up in that target and the other items show up in the all target?

highest bid wins -- in most cases.

product-targets are used mainly to create different

bidding strategies for different (groups of) products --

typically, the all-products group must have a lower bid

than a more specific product-target (group) to win and

be seen in the auctions.

filters and negative-keywords may be used

to remove specific or less relavant items or

groups of items from the auctions.

Hi,

This is redundant to create a separate ad group with product_type=x if you have targeted all products already in an another ad group.
Your ads may trigger from both of these targeting no matter which of them has higher bid.

I will suggest you to go though this article.

It's not redeundant at all, I'd like to bid higher for specific products while continuing to advertise everything else at a placeholder bid.

May be it can work, but I have never tried it this way. Good luck Smiley Happy

there should be a table under 'tips' that may help
in deciding ad-group and product-target structure
based on bidding-strategies, messaging-needs, and
campaign goals (for regular-product-listing-ads) here --

if there are any unresolved questions about a specific
campaign structure, contacting a product-listing-ads
specialists for clarification is likely the best course.
