Ad URL options (advanced), Tracking template and Custom parameter.

Hello Friends,

I have recently saw something new in Landing Page Section, when I have tried to add a new text ad.

Final URL & Destination URL

When I selected the Final URL option, I have got 2 more options, i.e.- URLs for mobile and Ad URL options (advanced). Inside Ad URL Option, I can see 2 more options - Tracking template and Custom parameter.
Can anyone out there explain this for us. What is this? Why we should use this? and How to use this?

in a simple and step by step way.

thanks,

Manoj

Hi Manoj
this new feature allows you to manage URL tracking in a more time effective way and also reduces crawl and load times, so now instead of setting a single destination URL that included tracking codes you get presented with the options you mentioned above

The 'Final URL' will essentially be the landing page that the user is taken to after clicking on your advert

The 'URL Options' section is where you’ll find the ability to scale your tracking code changes with the tracking template and custom parameter fields. The tracking template tells AdWords how to assemble your URLs and allows you to scale tracking parameter updates across multiple URLs.

i hope this helps

Hi Manoj,

Tracking template & custom parameters are value track parameters used to track different details (like match type & device for instance) that would be appended to the final destination URL for granular tracking. I'd suggest reading this article to understand value track parameters and how it helps.

Good luck,

Sumanth

Hi Manoj,

Welcome to the AdWords community Smiley Happy

This new features clearly differentiates the Landing page URL and your Final Destination URL.

Previously if you want to use any third party tools for tracking or campaigns management software and custom tracking in your campaigns for better analysis, then you had to change the URL of the campaigns. Then your ads and url went into editorial review and you need to wait and you loose the history of the ads and URL. To reduce this effort, Google has introduced it so that this URL entering process would become easy, because now, if you implement any third party tools, there is no need to change the ads, you only to insert the tracking template and custom parameter.

Hello. I am trying to figure out how this all works when using a third party tracking solution with just one parameter and it would need to be a custom parameter.

Now, in my test, I've set two control sets. The 1st one is as follows:
I've revised my ad so that display url still = www.displayurl.com and now destination url is no longer used and am using final url with that set = www.displayurl.com.

Then, I set a tracking template like this:
http://www.trackingurl.com/track.php?id=xxxxxxxxxx (where xxxxxxxxxx represents unique string of letters and numbers)
and then set first custom parameter of {_id} and then set the value = xxxxxxxxxx

That worked. The ad was approved. But when I hover over the ad in adwords, it shows in the browser status bar that the underlying url is just www.displayurl.com. Is it only going to www.displayurl.com and not to http://www.trackingurl.com/track.php?id=xxxxxxxxxx, ie: not being tracked?

I then set up control experiment #2 as follows:
display url still = www.displayurl.com and now destination url is no longer used and am using final url with that set = www.displayurl.com.
I set a tracking template like this:
http://www.trackingurl.com/track.php?id={_id}
and then set first custom parameter of {_id} and then set the value = xxxxxxxxxx (the unique string of letters and numbers)

That also worked! The ad was approved. But, again, when I hover over the ad in adwords, it shows in the browser status bar that the underlying url is just www.displayurl.com. Is it only going to www.displayurl.com and not to http://www.trackingurl.com/track.php?id=xxxxxxxxxx, ie: not being tracked?

So, which, if either, is correct? Or is there another way to do this?

I want to make sure my clients' ads are all approved both now and post changes on July 1st, and yet want to make sure that clicks to all ads are being tracked, ie: ultimately going to http://www.trackingurl.com/track.php?id=xxxxxxxxxx before being redirected to www.displayurl.com.

Thank you.

Hi Jason,

Have you checked the Product Manager's thread given in Mini's response? I think you'd get more clarity by reading the entire thread. If not, feel free to respond on that there.
