why many clicks from adwords content network carries no referrer info?

We recordes log of web traffics of adwords ads our clients put into adwords.  we notice that lots of click logs from google content network has no referrer info.  it seems adwords treats those blank referrer clicks as invalid in reporting. but I would like to get more understanding how  those clicks occurred and why they are invalid.

You help would be much appreciated.

Hi cwu2006,

I don't think there is a direct relation between clicks with no referrer data and invalid clicks. Invalid clicks are genreally multiple clicks from the same IP address within a short period of time.

Not all sites will provide referrer data, and not all browsers will provide that data either.

Best of Luck!

Pete

Hi cwu2006,

There could be many things how Google treats different set of clicks happening inside advertiser's account. If the clicks are found by Google to be invalid, you won't get charged for them and if feasible you are credited with that appropriate balance in your account.

The way 3d party tool tracks Adwords clicks and the way Google tracks them might have discrepancies due to many reasons.

Good thing is that the invalid clicks are actually filtered out before your account is updated with click, cost  etc data.

Hope this helps!

Hello cwu;

You are referring to the Google display network - GDN (formally known as the content network). On GDN keywords work collectively as a theme, using contextual targeting, to find relevent pages for your ad. I do not quite understand how you were able to find which specific keyword triggered your ad? (In contrast to the search network, where you exactly know which KW triggered your ad).

You can't rely on referrer info, particularly on either the search or display networks.  You can, however, use ValueTrack parameters on your destination URL to get reliable data.  In your case, try the {placement} parameter.  For more details, see:

As Pete already mentioned, not all sites provide referrer data. For example AdSense publishers can specify in their AdSense account if they want to show their URL in reporting or not. Similar with AdMob apps for example. These will show up as weird-looking URL-s if you look at your automatic placements in the Display-Network tab in your AdWords account.

This is making sense. however the larger discrepancies between clicks we recorded and Google reported , especially for the ads in display network, must indicate the existence of invalid clicks. but why invalid clicks are more in display network then search network?

Hi cwu2006,

Have you added the invalid click data columns to your campaign tab? If not, you should do that. It may give you some insight to help answer your question.

Why would DN have a higher invalid click rate? That's a very difficult question to answer!
