Urgent Need help in A/B testing using Google content experiments

Hi All,

I have created the A/B testing using google content experiments. Created two landing pages with major difference as headline. I really dont know how exactly it works on adwords campaign. What I have done is, created one adcopy which is directing to original landing page. My understanding is, whoever see the ad by typing concern keywords in google, that URL in turn will divide the traffic among two pages(original & varaition 1). Is that understanding is correct?.

or

Someone please explain me how does it work in adwords.

Thanks,

B.Dhivya

If you have set up your test in Google Analytics (as it sounds that you have) then your ads should be pointed to your "original" page.

You are correct in thinking that Google will split the traffic between to two pages to determine a winner.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

I have some more doubts. Please help me out.

I have read in few threads that we can not segregate the traffic in google analytics content experiments. I want only adwords traffic to see my both the landing pages(original & variant 1) . Both the pages are live only in adword campaign , nowhere else in the website that page is being used. My question is ,now only adwords traffic can see my landing pages?
Direct traffic/referral sites will not affect my A/B testing in adword campaign?

Hi Steve,

My another doubt, I have started this content experiment yesterday. After 22 hours of data, google analytics is showing only 11 experiment sessions happened. But When I check in the adword campaign, impressions for the the ads with original landing page is 185. Is it disparity problem between adwords & analytics.

I am running two ad group with 2 ad copies in each ad group using original landing page. Main objective is to test the performance of landing pages not the ad groups or ad copies. I believe, this will not affect my objective.

Thanks,
B.Dhivya.

What you have read online is correct - Google Content Experiments will split all traffic that goes to the "original" page between the two test pages.

If you have organic, direct or referral traffic going to this page then this, too will form part of the experiment, but if this is an AdWords only landing page you should not get any contamination.

As an extra control you might want to exclude this page from indexation using your robots.txt file....

also - I do believe there is a lag in reporting in the experiment reports - check back later to see if the numbers have caught up....

Hi Dhivya,

If you want to show your landing page for Adwords traffic only then add "NOFOLLOW" AND "NOINDEX" tags in the html code of that landing page. This will prevent the page from getting crawled and indexed by Google which means this page will not get any organic traffic.

Regarding the difference you are seeing between Sessions and Adwords data, check below link - https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1257084?hl=en

Thanks a lot Steve & Ashish for the guidance. I keep facing obstacles. After creating the content experiments, 3 leads has been generated from those landing pages til now. That conversion count is not visible in the analytics, conversion rate is showing 0%.

I guess, I have specified the goal properly. Given thank you page url in the destination url . I have no clue whats going wrong?

Hi Dhivya,

I am putting some checks for you to verify at your end in order to identify the reason for not showing the conversion data in analytics.

- Are you seeing those 3 conversions in your Adwords Interface?
- Have you linked Adwords and Analytics?
- Is the Analytics code installed properly on the landing page?
- Is the auto-tagging in the adwords turned on?
- Do you have a redirect on your destination url?
- Are you tracking the conversions in Adwords using Adwords tracking code or importing the conversion data from Google Analytics? If you are importing the conversions from Analytics your conversion number should match with Adwords numbers but the conversion rate may still vary.

The reason for the conversion discrepancy is that AdWords is calculating conversion rate as below :
Click conversion rate = Conversions / Clicks

whereas Analytics is calculating conversion rate as below:
Goal conversion rate = Conversions / Sessions

Another reasons for the difference in conversion numbers shown in Adwords and Analytics could be because of following two reasons:

- There is a reporting delay in Analytics which can go up to 2 days before showing the conversions.
- You may be trying to compare Goals and transactions from ALL traffics sources, rather than just those from google/cpc.

For more details on discrepancy, check this link - https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1034383?hl=en

Do put more questions if it still doesn't solve your issue!

Ashish

Thanks Ashish,
1. Yes I am seeing the conversion in adwords & in Landing report as well.
2. yes,linked adwords & analytics
3.analytics code is installed and auto tagging also enabled
4. this question I didnt understand "Do you have a redirect on your destination url?" COuld please rephrase it for me?
5. tracking conversion in adwords only using conversion code.

or
I doubt on myself "the goal" which I have created is correct or not.
My goal setup is - Create an account ["My goal in the landing page to create free trial account"]
Goal type- Destination URL
Destination equals to "thank youpage url"
value optional is off & funnel optional is OFF

In the experiment tab, the graphs are showing for "experiment sessions" when i change to conversion or conversion rate " graph is plain".

I dont know what is going wrong.

Hi Dhivya,

URL Redirection means, when someone clicks on your ad the user is taken to different url which is different from what your have specified in destination url.

The "graph is plain" because it hasn't yet tracked any conversion. It will show as soon as you have got at least 1 conversion.

Please try to troubleshoot why "Analytics is not tracking Goals" with below URL:
