Tracking Template

Hi, I had some questions about how the Adwords Tracking Template works.

 

I understand the benfit - if we set up a tracking template at the account or campaign level we can modify tracking without causing the campaign to go into review and lose its history.

However, I'm confused by how it works. Could someone please help answer the questions below?

1. When the user clicks on the ad, does the ad direct the user to the tracking template url, and then redirect to the final destination url? Or does the ad send the user directly to the final url, but appends the ValueTrack parameters from the tracking template onto the final destination url?
2. If there is a redirect, who is responsible for chaining them? E.g: ad goes to tracking url, the tracking destination is responsible for redirecting to the final url?
3. Is there any benefit to using a tracking template when the final destination is the google playstore? Does google playstore pass the ValueTrack parameters as the referrer if the user installs the app?

Tracking Code - Definition & How it Works

 

Tracking code works very closely with our ads’ final URLs. If we don’t use tracking code with our URL and someone clicks our ad then he/she will go directly to the landing page URL, in that case we will not gathered any user information like from which keywords, device, campaign etc he/she comes to our landing page.

 

If we set up tracking code then we can send potential customers to specific landing page URLs that have extra information, like the keyword that triggered our ad or the type of device (Computer or Tablet or Mobile) the user who clicked on our ad was using.

 

Q - 1. When the user clicks on the ad, does the ad direct the user to the tracking template url, and then redirect to the final destination url? Or does the ad send the user directly to the final url, but appends the ValueTrack parameters from the tracking template onto the final destination url?

Answer: - Once User click on our ads then he/she directly land to our landing page and during the landing on our landing page, Tracking template record the parameters as per our Tracking code setup. Like Keywords, Match Type, Device, Network, Campaign etc.

Answer - Yes, This is beneficial. If anyone who clicked on our ads came from mobile devices, where they were located when they clicked your ads, and much more. We can track these information.

Thanks Anand its a bit clearer now. Could you just elaborate a bit more on a few points?

1. "Once User click on our ads then he/she directly land to our landing page" - so there is no redirect? for example:

tracking template : http://mytracker.com/blah={{value_track_param}}&custom_param=blah
final url : http://website.com

when will mytracker.com receive the tracking info?
what will the url the user land on look like?

3. How does referrer and auto-tagging work together with tracking template for App Install Campaign? for example:

tracking template : http://mytracker.com/blah={{value_track_param}}&custom_param=blah
final url: http://playstore.google.com/my_app

will the user land on http://playstore.google.com/my_app?referrer=gclid%3D123xyz&c&custom_param=blah&blah=tracking_data ?

Answer - No, there is no redirction. User directly land to landing page, AdWords automatically track the user information according to Tracking template.

Answer - After user land on landing page

what will the url the user land on look like? -

Answer - Your landing page + Tracking Code (including keywords, device, network, etc)

 

Q 3. How does referrer and auto-tagging work together with tracking template for App Install Campaign? for example:
