This is quite a newish thing and is going to get more and more commmon in the future.


Basically what is happening is that if someone is signed into a Googe account (in some countries), Google is using SSL search which doesn't pass the referrer data on to analytics.


This is only for the organic traffic, AdWords still passes this information through.

Apparently Firefox is building extra privacy and security into their new version so over time we are going to get less and less useful data from the organic referrals.


You can create a filter to help you find out what "pages" this traffic was sent to which might help you with the types of keywords that they are likely to be.
