The data in your Google Analytics account is critical for making business decisions, and there may be a time when you find that you no longer have access to your account. This could be for any number of reasons, but don’t worry - the data is not lost forever! Your local support team can help you regain access to your Analytics account, and Niall from the Dublin team is here to outline the process that you will need to take.

Trying to regain access to your Google Analytics account is always recommended before starting a new account and losing all of your historical data. Historical data can be invaluable when you are trying to show trends and growth over time.

The Google Online Specialist that you speak to will first look up your account based on the account number (format UA-XXXXX-Y) which should be found in the source code of your website. From this, we can identify any current Administrators. We will send an email to the administrators of the account as follows:

Mary Smith asked me to contact you because you have account access to “manage users” on the following Google Analytics account UA-XXXX-Y

Mary would like to be given access to the account. Could you contact Mary within five business days at marysmith@company.com to complete this process?

If Mary is able to prove ownership of all domains being tracked in this account or property, she might be able to gain access independently.

Once five business days have passed, if you have had no contact from any of the current Administrators, the Online Specialist will send you instructions on how to prove ownership of your website. This is a very simple task, however you may need the assistance of your web developer if you cannot make changes to your website yourself. You will be asked to:

  • Create a text file and save it as analytics.txt

  • Include a specific string of text that will be provided for you by the Online Specialist

  • Upload the text file to the root of the domains that you are requesting access for to be viewed by the Online Specilaist as www.website.com/analytics.txt

If the Google Analytics account is currently linked to an AdWords Account you will also have to answer specific questions pertaining to the AdWords Account to also prove ownership of that account and the data that will be viewable within the Analytics reporting.

Once this is complete, the Online Specialist will grant you access to the Analytics account with the email address of your choice.

Hi,

Unfortunatelly I cannot provide ownership via uploading text file - due to company restrictions.
However I can add a meta tag to my website.
I already have the content of my site's analytics.txt -- but I can not figure out how / what html shall I add in that meta tag...
Is there a guideline for that?

Hi Peter,
The AdWords support team will ask you to add a specific string of text to the .txt file. This shows that you have edit access to the site, and therefore are the site owner.

Have you been in touch with AdWords Support?

Kathleen

This is exactly what I was looking for... but how do I get in touch with a "Google Online Specialist"?
