Referrer records from Google Adwords, strange issues

Hi Guys,

Trying to solve this issue, have seen it accross two different domains now, hoping someone here can shed some light.

Domain 1:

120.23.192.68 - - [05/Jan/2013:23:04:10 +1100] "GET /our-inner-page-here.html?gclid=CN-rpKeW0bQCFchfpQodj3MAmA HTTP/1.1" 200 22145 "http://www.google.com.au/" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729)"

Domain 2:

2013-01-02 23:23:50 10.240.10.26 GET / utm_medium=cpc&ref=ABI1000&gclid=CIiU09boyrQCFYhfpQodiEAAdw 80 - 108.162.249.34 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+7.0;+Windows+NT+6.1;+WOW64;+Trident/4.0;+SLCC2;+.NET+CLR+2.0.50727;+.NET+CLR+3.5.30729;+.NET+CLR+3.0.30729;+Media+Center+PC+6.0;+.NET4.0C;+.NET4.0E;+InfoPath.2;+MS-RTC+LM+8) http://www.google.com.au/ 200 0 0 79

This is happening a substantial ammount of the time.

Both domains are using CloudFlare, but I dont think it is that, as there is also a lot of the normal google adwords referrer information you would expect to see.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Marc

Hi Marc,

What is it that seems strange? The first domain is using autotagging, the second a combination of manual and autotagging.

Did you not expect to see www.google.com.au? If so, you might want to check your geo-targeting.

Did you expect to see the search query in the referrer data? If the visitor used secure search (https), you will not see the search query in the referrer data.

Is it something else?

Best of Luck!

Pete

Hi Pete,

Sorry I should have pre-framed. What is strange is the full referrer information is actually not there. Even if using a secure search (https) you DO SEE the referrer information with Google Adwords. At least in Australia. Confirmed via http header sniffer.

Do you know any other reason it might be stripping?

I thought perhaps corporate firewall / proxies?

Seen this before?

Hi Mercurian,

You are correct! I did a search for one of my sites from https://www.google.com.au, clicked on the organic result and much of the query string was passed along with the referrer data. I don't target Australia, so I can't test a click on an ad to see what happens there.

Do you have a re-write rule on the site?

You know what....

I have just assumed that we are not doing a re-direct on them, HOWEVER we may have an IIS rule in place that is doing something like that for certain users or devices.

Checking into this today, good suggestion.

Thanks
