OpenTable Conversion Tracking

Has anyone worked with OpenTable reservation network? We've tried to add conversion or event tracking for users that completed a reservation but OpenTable no longer allows third-party code on their pages.

We're now looking for a workaround. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Hirshorn,

If OpenTable doesn't allow the conversion code on their page, it'll be a little hard to track conversions there.

One thing you could do is have your ads direct to your site and set up event tracking for when folks click on the OpenTable button on your site, before they make a reservation. You can set up event tracking via Google Analytics (more here) to track that button click, make that event a "goal," and then you can import those goals as conversions within AdWords (more here).

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback, Coco! We're planning to add event tracking to the site to see the number of users we drive to the OpenTable reservations engine but also hoped to track those users who reach OT and also complete a reservation.

Unfortunately, OpenTable's limitations on adding conversion or event tracking to their site won't allow us to see those users to complete a conversion (reservation).

Thanks for your insight. We're also looking into using OpenTable's internal reporting to see if we can gain any data by traffic source (paid search, email, organic). We'll post any future updates.

Has anyone gotten anywhere with this we too are looking at how to track actual conversions but are stuck at just showing the goal of hitting the reservation button.

Yes, using GA event tracking/goals based on the exit to open table system is the way to go. You could even program it in using AdWords conversion codes as well. If you are using the widget that allows users to select their dinner time, location, number of people, etc., that can be tracked into google analytics as well using the various event tracking parameters.

Hi Bryan

We have a goal set-up in GA but just need to add code to the “find a Table” button but unfortunately no WP/OpenTable widgets we’ve tried allow access to the button’s code.

Can you advise which widget you are using?

Hey Bryan,

This seems to be interesting in concept. The two thoughts here would be to track based on exit clicks to Open Table or track based on clicks specific to a button that opens into an OpenTable widget. Either way, neither is an exact science, but much better than nothing. We would love to know how your agency has implemented this solution for your clients at what cost.
