No Adwords Click Data Showing In Analytics For Certain Campaigns

Hi all,

  • I created a new Adwords search-only campaign
  • I created my ad groups, keywords, and ads as per usual
  • When creating my ads I selected Final URL - as opposed to destination URL (this is the only difference between this campaign and other campaigns)
  • I did not enter any tracking parameters or anything as I don't believe these are needed - I have autotagging set up

The campaign has received clicks since it went live. However, when I review the campaign in Google Analytics under the "Adwords" reporting section I don't get any clicks data. I can see sessions, time on site, bounce rate, conversion rate etc. But I get 0 clicks, 0 cpc, $0 spend, 0% ROAS etc.

The only difference I can tell is having selected Final as opposed to Destination URL. Why would this be causing the problem?

Also, in my display targeting reports in Analytics I cannot see clicks data either.

I had spoken on the phone to an Adwords representative, who said they would investigate the issue - they never got back to me and I haven't heard anything since.

Hi Sam,

As per your details, I don't see any issues with anything and the situation looks pretty strange. Can you try adding a new ad with Destination URL (not Final URL) in the campaign in question here, just to cross verify that Final URL is not causing this issue?

Secondly, do you have Analytics code placed on the landing page that you are targeting in this new campaign? Just in case, if you have new landing page and you may have missed to add the analytics tag on it.

Ashish

Sam,

Can you confirm that in the Analytics GA Account you have properly Linked Your AdWords account under the Admin - Property (view) - Product Linking - AdWords Linking - See image below

Step 1

ga linking.JPG

Configure AdWords link group

Linking accounts enables authorized Analytics and AdWords users to access data from both products.

Step 2

Can you confirm you have properly Linked In your Adwords Account to your GA Account.

Gear Box -  Account Settings - Linked Accounts -  Google Analytics

Analytics has to Link to AdWords.  AdWords Has to Link to Analytics.

If those two pieces are not connected you will not see day data and that is usually the case.

If those two are Linked Properly then there is a larger issue that only  Google support can help you with.

Yes, I can confirm that both accounts  are linked.

To back this up, every other campaign reports its click metrics correctly. Just not this new one! And the only difference is the final vs destination URL setup.

Sam,

Thanks for Confirming That,

I have not seen that issue in any of my Accounts with Final Destination URL already set,

You have a ticket outstanding I assume because you did call in. Give it 24 Hours and then call back. Support has probably escalated your case to an specialist who has access to all your data and will work on a fix.

Hi Ashish,

I edited the ads in the campaign to use destination as opposed to final URL .. and now the clicks data is being recorded absolutely fine!

It seems there is a bug in this account (or maybe just campaign) with final URL.

What are your thoughts?

Sam

Hi Sam,

As of now I am not sure if it's a bug or anything else, but the same can be checked with a Google representative. Let's see what they say.

As you are not using any tracking parameters in the URL, you can continue using Destination URL instead of final URL. In July-2015 all the URLs will be automatically moved to Final URL and hopefully all your tracking will continue to work smoothly.

One more thing you may want to try is upgrade one of your urls to final url (just one to test). First check that you are getting data on that url in Analytics and then upgrade. Then wait for a day or two and see if the data is still getting tracked in Analytics or stopped after the change. If the data stops showing after change, then bring this point before Google representative, as this is unusual and should not be happening.

Ashish
