Is it possible to capture searched for keyphrase from the incoming adwords click?

Hi

Does anyone know if its possible to capture the keyphrase used by a user who then goes on to click on your ad from the incoming url?

I can capture keywords used through google analytics, but I would like to capture the keyphrase typed in to store in my own DB for conversion tracking.  (Google analytics/adwords conversion tracking doesn't quite work how I want it to for my own specific purposes).

If this isn't possible, any suggestions as to how I can capture keyphrases for each incoming visitor?

Thanks for any responses.

Hello;

Are you referring to the search query report?

Hey Joe,

It is and it isn't. If the search was on Google and did not use "https", the query will be in the referrer data. If "https" was used by the visitor, the search query will not be available. Not all visits from search partners will have the query data available in the referrer data. Since the advent of secure search at Google, there are big gaps in the data you will get. It's just not very reliable.

The Search Terms report is about the best you can do. Google does it's best to hide the actual query tied to an individual visit. They consider this to be a privacy issue.

Best of Luck!

Thanks Pete for the informative answer.

It's a real shame that you can't get the referrer info from an https search.  I'd find this information so useful in optimising my ads.

Hey Joe,

Same is true with analytics when https is used for a search. The query is not shown. Would be nice, huh?

Hi Joe.

I'm a newbie in AdWords and you know, I had the same question. I wish if they could come up with some kind of work-around. I mean, sure there is the Search Terms report. However, when Google says privacy concerns..., well, when we capture a lead, we could anyway get to know their details. After all, what are we paying Google for? If we get to know what search term they entered the moment they clicked the ad, it would save us time and effort in downloading the Search Terms report and matching it with the Lead report.
