International Searches

Hi,

I've noticed that when abroad and searching google uk (www.google.co.uk) the UK text ads are being being given a much higher position on the search pages than previously. Its as though the uk ads are being given priority over the country of origin ads? Has google updated the ''Improvements to location targeting for international searches'' policy? There is no official notification of this anywhere.

Thanks

Hi there;

Nope.; All ads targeting s specific Geo-location are ranked during the auction. Positions are allocated based on the ad-rank of each ad,  which  wins a slot (during the auction)

The top ranked ads win the highest 3 positions (if meet additional threshold criteria), and the rest are ranked, on the right side.

Hi Happy_Search,

What is happening here, is ads are being showed based on your "location of intent". When you use a country-specific domain, such as google.co.uk (United Kingdom), without including another location in the search, this will indicate the country specified in the domain (United Kingdom, in this instance) is the location that the person is interested in, and therefore the ads shown are targeting the UK.

You can read more about how ads are matched to geographic locations here.

Rereading your question; Once you are overseas, you automatically directed to the local  Google search results page, (though the UI language does not change). So,  could you explain how you keep using Google.co.uk once overseas?

Hi KathleenG,

I think you are correct in what you have said, but its causing account issues which im unsure the Google technicians are aware of. Please read below;

For some weeks now my est bid thresholds have been reading 1p & 30p (1st and top page estmiates) i have looked through my accounts statistics and have noticed that the majority of my impressions and clicks have been made from ''location of interest''. More strangley the avg position of these clicks is almost always 1.0 (but this high position has only been allocated for location of interest clicks/imps)

Are my account estimated bids coming from my location of interest rather than searches made from within my targeted geo location?

Hi Happy_Search,

To be sure of this I'd need to see your account. I am going to ask a member of the AdWords team to look into this for you as I do not have access to your AdWords account. Please expect an email soon.

Hi KathleenG,

I haven’t heard anything from the Adwords customer services but that is probably the last of my concerns at the moment.

I’ve found some more worrying signs since our last correspondence. I’ve noticed that approx. between every 5-10 searches of the preview tool my text ads jump to the first page of search results. In fact very closely to the top of page positions. My Max CPC is set to a level where it is displaying my text ads roughly on page 3 of the google search pages, so in effect my ads placement jumps 20 ad positions every 5-10 searches of my keyword.

Due to my earlier concerns regarding the ‘’location of interest’’ being issued with much higher positions I think this is causing the AdWords system to be unable to correctly calculate an ads position. Shouldn’t clicks made from location of interest be attributed to the location you are targeting rather than them having two separate ad ranks?

Secondly I’ve noticed another worrying sign, this time with the preview tool. As stated my Max CPC is set to a level where am displaying approx. on page 3 of the search results, however my advert is not viewable on the preview tool until as stated above every 5-10 imps it shows on the first page.

I have /and friends have searched for my keyword & can confirm I am almost always showing on page 3 of the search results pages but the preview tool isn’t displaying my ad. I have checked my servers access logs to view the google query strings when customers clicks my ads and this confirms my ads are on page 3 of the search results pages, so why doesn’t the preview tool showing this?......It seems that the preview tool has a min bid threshold to show even though in reality my ad is showing on page 3.

Hi Katleen.

I have just been chatting to Nikunj from adwords who can confirm that my text ads are showing in the top positions only on a temp basis roughly every 5 searches / imps. Then drops to roughly page 3 of the search results pages.

Whats even more of a concern is that i noticed that my ads only show in the top positions when logged into my account and perform a preview tool search or when a live search is made (agian only when logged into my account)

This only started happening approx on 29th May when the location of interest positions started showing an avg of 1.0???

Hi Happy_Search,
I would advise that you share all of this information with Nikunj. The AdWords team have access to your account and will be able to speak to specialists about why you might be seeing this happen. As a Community Manager I can only give general advice as I cannot log into your account.

Hi Kathleen,

Thanks for your reply. I understand you can only provide guidance on here but as this is a quite technical issue and hard to explain i really cant get the customer team at adwords to understand the points and proof im supplying to them. I have found a genuine loop hole in the adwords system to enable any advertiser to get to the top of page placement postions on the first page of results for a very low max cpc. This has been brought about since some kind of update made by google in may 2014.
