Gmail Ads Conversions are not necessarily coming from keywords?

Hi People,

I have been running my Gmail ads (or site targeting that placement only works at mail.google.com), and get 4 conversions over the weeks.

I also set my display keywords to make sure the ads only display for my business related audience. Interestingly, I found in the keywords stats panel, it only counts 1 conversion. So I wonder where the other 3 coming from, or other criteria I've set?

Thank you!

Jason

Hi Jason,

When you say "site targeting placement that only works at mail.google.com," what do you mean by that?

If you're running Gmail ads, the only placement you should have in your ad group is mail.google.com, like you said. And then any other targeting you use will be layered on top of that.

If you look under the Keywords section of the Display Network tab, and scroll all the way to the bottom of your page, there should be a summary line that sums up all traffic from your keyword targeting in a given time period. Does that bottom "total" row also show only 1 conversion? If so, you may have other targeting set up as well.

Hi @CassieH,

Not sure why I can't properly upload picture to Adword forum now after it got revamped. But you can see my panel screenshot here.

So the total 4 conversion is from display, which is Gmail ads only(mail.google.com). And in keywords list it only says 1 in total. What the other 3 might come from?

Thanks,

Jason

Hi Jason,

I can't tell from the screenshot you shared, but what I'd recommend is to click into the Display Network tag of your Gmail campaign, and click through each of the sub-tabs there (Keywords, Placements, Interests & Remarketing, etc.). When you scroll to the bottom of each of those pages, it will show how many conversions you have from each targeting method. So if you have any other targeting set up besides keywords in your Gmail campaign, those could have pulled in the other 3 conversions.

Does that make sense?

Hi @CassieH,

Yeah I thought that way as well..but unfortunately none of the conversion from the other sub-tab.

Interests & Remarketing: None. (I'm not doing re-targeting)
Topics: Nope
Demographics: Yes male got 4 applications. But its total should be having nothing to do with keywords right?
Placement: 4 (of course all from mail.google.com)
Keywords: 1..but on the same page the total says 4.

I know this is stupid. But I wish I know which keyword generates conversions so I can chop some others off...

Best,
Jason

Hi Jason,

Okay, so let me make sure I understand how you have the campaign set up. You have 1 managed placement (mail.google.com) and on the Placements page, you see 4 total conversions.

Then you have a number of keywords, and a the bottom of the Keywords page, you see just 1 total conversion for keywords out of 4 total conversions for Display.

No other topics, interests, or remarketing beyond that.

This is probably a silly suggestion, but have you made sure that you're viewing "All Keywords" at the top of the keywords page, and not "all enabled" or something like that? Because that would hide conversions you got on inactive keywords.

Outside of that I would recommend calling the AdWords Specialist team if you haven't already so that they can look at the specifics of your account, or you can share another, larger screenshot here showing the full Keywords page under the Display Network tab (just make sure to blur out your account number and email address).

Hi @CassieH

Aha I really appreciate your reply here for everything possibility where the other 3 conversions is hiding. But no luck yet, I'm viewing the keywords list and never delete any one of them.

Yeah so I already sent this to out account manager (big account we're)..I thought question like this might get result more efficiently on the forum than our correspondent.

But thank you again. I will keep updating this post until it's solved and will mark this accordingly.

Best,

Jason

Hi @CassieH,

Just get in touched with our Google analyst and got the answer:

The three conversions happened before 19th of November - at a time when I had not added the keywords and topics as targeting (topics and keywords were added on 19th Nov). At that time when the conversions happened, mail.google.com was the only targeting criteria in the campaign and therefore the conversions are only showing up for the placement, and I do not see the conversions attributed to any keywords.

If I try different time span, I might find out the answer earlier. Anyway feel so much relieved now to know what's happening.

Thanks again!

Jason
