Getting GCLID in lower-case from Google Ad Click

Some of the AdWords redirections we get on our site comes with lower-case gclid value.

After we get lower-case gclid it's value we can not report conversions to AdWords based on this gclid because the original gclid is mix cased and case-sensetive.

View below one of the lower-cased  gclid request info we get in our ASP.NET global.asax file using System.Web.HttpApplication.Request.ToRaw(),

The Referer property marked with yellow points that the request came directly from Google.

GET http://www.daka90.co.il/packages?gclid=cjwkeajwhrzlbrc35-f9ssh0fasjad5obj1kylnrwqus0vztbm1qkc7lapsc6... HTTP/1.1

Looks like there is some problem with the Google internal redirection made when clicking on the add link.

Any info how to fix?

Thanks,

Nadav

Found the problem.

If a gclid comes with double hyphens (--) our site will delete 1 hyphen and make the gclid lower-case.

Thanks for the help.

Hi @Nadav D,

This is issue is usually related to some sort of server side rewrite engine that is altering the URL's.

This is Adwords verbatim solution to this issue: "To resolve this issue, configure your web server to allow all non-reserved URL characters, including uppercase characters and symbols like '-' (hyphen) and '_' (underscore), since these may be utilized by AdWords in generating a unique gclid parameter for a click."

This is the google support page that talks about this issue: GCLID - Auto Tagging

Hi Nadav,

This doesn't seem to be a rewrite issue. Case is preserved in the URL and in the cookie.

There must something else going on in the ASAX file. I couldn't find any documentation for ToRaw(). Tke another look at your code, or post here and someone may get an idea for you.

Best of Luck!

Found that all the lowercase gclids we get (1-3 each day) are not presented in the CLICK_PERFORMANCE_REPORT all the other not lowercase gclids are there.

(I'm searching there non-case sensitive search).

Is this information suggests some direction?

Hi Nadav D,

If you don't mind me saying so, that's just weird! The URL is not getting re-written. The original value should still be available in the query string.

Best of Luck!
