Duplicate conversions in Adwords

We use Adwords conversion tracking on our webpage. Unfortunately some of the transaction are tracked multiple times. I might be mistaken but as far as I can see these multiple transactions result from page reloads. Did any of you encountered similar problems and do you maybe have an idea how we could prevent page reloads?

Many thanks!

Hi felipe,

According to Google engineers, page reloads should not result in an additional conversion being recorded.

To prevent a page reload, set the cache time for the page to 0. When a user attempts to refresh or return to the page via a bookmark, they will get a "Page Expired' notice.

Best of Luck!

Pete

Hello Pete,

Many thanks for your help!

We have also implemented Google Analytics ecommerce tracking. What is quite odd though is that the Analytics tracking works perfectly well and does not produce any duplicates... We are using Google Tag Manager and both the Adwords and the Analytics tag are fired based on the same rule.

We have seen this issue many times with our clients.

What we've found is that a user will bookmark a confirmation page (where the conversion tracking code is placed) and come back at a later time. This was particularly the case with our travel clients that received an itinerary with their order receipt.

Since Google Adwords is using a 3rd party cookie to track returning visitors the conversion shouldn't be duplicated as 1-per click conversions. However, sometimes we find that they still are. This is still stumping us.

We've turned to Analytics for a lot of our conversion data at this point.

If any converting user leaves your website, deletes their browser cookies, and returns to the conversion page, it will be tracked as a unique conversion in both Adwords and Analytics. There's nothing you can do about those users unless you start getting really creative with dynamically generated url parameters and use Google Analytics.

For example, you could set up the website to display a certain url parameter when a conversion is generated and then any other time that page is accessed the url parameter changes. If you approached it this way you will be able to at least keep the data clean in Analytics by only counting conversions on urls with your defined parameters.

You can then import the goals from Analytics into Adwords. Analytics will attribute the conversion to when the conversion happened and not when the click that converted happened. When your conversions come in you'll see them appear a little differently.

Also, Google Adwords uses 3rd party cookies which can often be blocked by browser security settings and are deleted frequently. When blocked, this will allow a conversion to trigger when a user blocking 3rd party cookies visits the page but it won't install a cookie on their browser.

Google Analytics uses a 1st party cookie and is deleted and blocked much less frequently. The challenge with Analytics is that Adword's 3rd party cookies can track across your domains but Analytics cannot without proper cross-domain tracking setup. We still find Analytics data to be the cleanest. We do miss the impressions before conversion report from Adwords but we've really increased the value of our data in the long run.

Hope that helps and gives you some ideas. If you're still at a loss I'd call the Google advertiser number and see if they can help you trouble shoot.

When using Adwords conversion tracking, you can add the field: google_conversion_order_id. This is an Unique Order ID, multiple conversions with the same Order ID are de-duplicated.

Is the google_conversion_order_id just for Product Listing Ad conversions or can it be used for all AdWords conversion tracking?
