Does googleadservices.com hide the GCLID ?

Hey there !

I'm in trouble right now. I'm using a manual tracking for Google Analytics (Measurement Protocol). I'm passing along the gclid parameter that I read from the URL on the landing page when a user comes from Adwords.

I recently discovered a lot of adwords traffic coming from googleadservices.com, and that traffic does not expose the GCLID in the destination URL so I'm not able to track the campaign bringing me the visit.

I've set up auto-tagging in Adwords.

I have access to the referral address : http://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?..........

Is there a way to extract the campaign name/id or the gclid from there ?

I read this Google update but it didn't help me much :

Is this a normal behaviour ? An error on my side or something else ?

Thanks !

Sorry, Moshe, I wasn't able to find anything about this.

Timothy, that article is pretty old, 2012, and not much help for your question.

Hi Timothy and Moshe,

Ok, I searched through my web logs for www.googleadservices.com to see what I could find. I found clicks that carried the gclid parameter and value, and I found clicks that had the gclid name in the query string, but no value. On further investigation, I determined the clicks with no gclid value were actually the AdsBot.

I use a combination of manual and auto tagging. The clicks with no gclid value also did not interpolate the Value Track items. That's my bet in your case, those are hits from the Adsbot-Google. That bot crawls your landing pages to make sure they are reachable. It plays a part in evaluating the user experience piece of the Quality Score. If the request includes a gclid value, that is the result of a click on one of your ads. If no gclid value is present, this was from the bot.

I'm not suggesting you take this answer as definitive. If you can look through your web logs, and if you are logging the request and the referrer as well as the user agent, you should be able to confirm this without too much effort.

Thank you very much for your answer.

I found the case you describe in the log and handled the situation.
