Conversion tracking in Adwords - How does it work exactly?

Hi, ok. So Conversion tracking through Adwords require putting a snippet of code on the appropriate landing pg where the action is that is the conversion you want to track.
When the user clicks on your Adwords ad and visits the landing pg with the snippet a temporary cookie is generated. It saves the fact that this specific user clicked on the Adwords Ad, went to the landing page....and then? Sure, a conversion will be counted for the ad if the user immediately goes to to convert in the planned manner but what happens if the go to another pg on your website and another and then come back and convert. How is that displayed and tracked? What if they dont do anything but bounce only to back the next day to convert?

Thanks

Hi Sven,

Great questions!

1. The conversion tracking code actually needs to go on the thank-you page people reach after taking an action, not on your landing page itself. Google records a conversion when the conversion tracking code fires, so you only want the code to fire when someone completes an action (i.e. arrives at a thank-you page after filling out a form or placing an order).

2. When someone clicks a Google ad, Google automatically adds cookies to their browser. You don't need code on your website to make this happen. Those cookies typically stay around for about 30 days (unless the user clears their cache before that). Because those cookies are there, Google can identify that the person clicked an ad even if they come back to your website and convert days after clicking your ad.

I hope that's helpful!

Hello,

Conversion tracking works on the principle of cookies and conversion window that you set. For example: 7 days, 30 days etc.. The conversion will be recorded only within that window that you defined, otherwise will not.

So if the user goes through multiple pages and finally filled up a form (where you already have the snippet installed), and that happens within the defined conversion window, AdWords would record it and increment it in your account.

If the user doesn't fill up the form or complete the action that you have implemented, conversion will not be recorded.

Hope this helps!
