Configurating Manual Tagging and ValueTrack

I'm implementing a 3rd party app that requires we switch from auto tagging to manual tagging. I'd also like to capture the keyword and matchtype data.

I'm trying to find a URL example that mixes manual tagged parameters (utm_*) with ValueTrack parameters, but am coming up short.

Would a URL formatted as follows pass the source, medium, campaign, keyword query and match type data?

example.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=FathersDay&keyword={keyword}&matchtype={matchtype}

Or am I mixing ice cream and sand here?

Thanks!

Hi AllieWill,

You might be mixing ice cream and sand, but I'm going to check for you. I'm going to ask one of our Online Specialists to look into this for you. You can expect an email about this soon.

Hi

utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=FathersDay&keyword={keyword}&matchtype={matchtype}

This URL will pass

Source, Medium, Campaign, KeyWord & Match Type data in URL.

I am not sure what you mean by keyword query, but if you mean search query by that then there is no way to pass search query with valuetrack or any other means after this announcement.

There are several other valuetrack parameters which are available for you to use in URL you can find them all here.

Hope that helps.

Update:

I implemented the utm source, medium and camapign tags, and those are passing through to Google Analytics.

I also included three ValueTrack parameters: {keyword}, {matchtype}, and {adposition}.

I can't find this information anywhere in GA, which makes me think I need to modify a setting somewhere? I saw a reference to the 'Custom campaign tags' in this post: https://www.en.adwords-community.com/t5/Tracking-Reporting/Help-configuring-ValueTrack-and-manual-au...

but the options available don't seem applicable.

What do I need to do to get ValueTrack data to pass into GA? Thanks!

Hi

Have you checked under Acquisition > campaigns in GA?

Yes.

Source, Medium, and Campaign name are passing through to GA.

No ValueTrack information for Keyword, Matchtype or Ad Position is passing.

Hi
Unfortunately there are no UTM parameters available for Matchtype and Ad Position, so you cant get that information in GA.
You can get Keyword information if you use "utm_term={keyword}" instead of "keyword={keyword}" (without double quotes)

Hope this helps

Hi Nik,

There are ValueTrack parameters available for keyword, match type and ad position, and according to this AdWords Support article it sounds like these parameters should pass into Google Analytics (bolding mine):

"ValueTrack is our easy-to-use AdWords URL-tagging feature. ValueTrack works with Google Analytics or your own tracking solution to provide detailed, useful data about each click on your ad. You can use this information to fine-tune your campaigns and settings for better performance....

...When you review your data in Google Analytics or look at your traffic logs, you can use the recorded information to help you analyze your campaign performance and improve your targeting and return on investment (ROI)."

However, I do note that all the URL examples in this article use only ValueTrack parameters; no UTM parameters or UTM/ValueTrack combos.

The question that is still unanswered is this:

  • If manual URL tagging is required to play nice with a 3rd party app, can UTM and ValueTrack parameters be combined in the same tagging URL to pass data to Google Analytics?

Example URL:

http://example.com?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Test%20-%20Search&keyword={keyword}...

And at a more basic level,

  • If you tag a URL with ValueTrack parameters, where do you go in Google Analytics to see the data?

I don't see anywhere in the documentation that it says you can't mix UTM and ValueTrack parameters in the same URL, but then again, it doesn't seem to be working either.

Appreciate any documentation you can point me to that better clarifies this issue. I also responded on Friday to the AdWords Community Support rep that reached out to me (Natasha), and hope to get further clarification from the AdWords team.

Thanks -

Hi @AllieWill

Lets 1st understand diffrence between ValueTrack and UTM Parameters.

ValueTrack: Using this method you can pass values of certain AdWords variables in URL like keyword, ad position, device type and many more.

UTM parameters : These query strings are read by Google analytics javascript and passed in to analytics for user to access them in reports.

Although value track as several parameters available to pass in URL as value, but UTM parameters which google analytics javascript can read are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content.

So essentially Google analytics can only pass above mentioned parameters in interface for reporting.

I hope this makes sense
