Can AdWords conversion tracking code replace remarketing tag?

My Google AM told us that the AdWords conversion tag has already contained the function of remarketing pixel and we don't need to deloy both of them on the website? Is this really the case? Does conversion tag collect all visitors to the website regardless of the traffic source and add their cookies to the remarketing list?

Hi @Jieni C,

1 word answer is NO.

If it is so then why AdWords generates different snippets for both.

@Archit is correct... however, the rep may not have been completely clear...

The AdWords conversion tag is specific to AdWords and also to conversions (not a huge surprise!) - but there is another way to track conversions - and that is by using Google Analytics goals.

If you have GA on your site you can track conversions and import these back into Adwords. At the same time - but not as part of the same configuration, you need to set this up separately - you can also generate remarketing lists and import those back into AdWords also.

So - can you use the same Adwords conversion code? No. But can you achieve everything you want to achieve with the one GA code? Yes.

This may be what your rep was referring to.

thank you both @stickleback @Archit

We're running a standard remarketing campaign and the advertiser doens't use GA.  But the Google AM insisted that we only needed to employ conversion tags for conversion tracking and collecting RMKT cookies at the same time.  Could you probably explain more why this won't work?

Thanks.

Hi Jieni,

These 2 tracking tags are totally independent of each other.

Remarketing list can only be generated either by placing AdWords remarketing tag or importing it from the GA.

If the GA account has not been set up then you need to place AdWords remarketing tag to create the remarketing list.

I would recommend you to signup for the GA account and best is to use the same Google account for both AdWords and GA.
