Best method to measure new visitors to unique landing page

Hello AdWords Community:

I am trying to measure new visitors to a unique landing page using Google Analytics.  There seems to be two ways to do it; however, the values vary considerably between the two methods.

Method 1: Traffic Sources >> Sources >> Direct >> Choose landing page >> Secondary dimension Visitors and then Visitor type

Method 2: Content >> Site Content >> Landing Pages >> Choose landing page >> Secondary dimension Visitors and then Visitor type

Method 2 returns a value 3-4x times that of Method 1.  So which one is more accurate?  Or is 'Direct' when someone actually puts the unique landing page URL in the browser, and the 'Content' method tallies up all results to that landing page no matter what the method - click on link containing, put URL in browser, etc?

Thanks for your help!

Bascially, yes.

direct is a visitor type - so in the first instance you are selecting the visitor type and then reselecting later on... of course, you're only going to get the direct traffic in there.

Direct traffic is a strange one... it's basically a "bucket term" that Google uses when it can't put the visitor into one of the other categories.... so it's not from search, or a referral, or an ad... must be direct then!

Ah okay - thanks for taking the time to clarify.

I will go with Method 2 then using 'Content', which is the "catch all" bucket for all new visitors to that unique landing page, regardless of method (direct, ad, embedded URL, etc).

Appreciate the help!
