Adwords Querystring Missing

Hi,

Our website relies on a quote page being completed. I've been able to assertain exactly which quotes were from Adwords and which were organic by capturing the referral url from the http header and analysing the Adwords querystring like:

http://www.google.co.uk/aclk?sa=l&ai=C_nFH3VxcVuSWIZH0bpvSl7AG-6Dz6AfL2YafngKF6dfwBAgAEAIgl-C8CygDYLuumIPQCqABtcPUzwPIAQGpAi7pjTKZLLk-qgQpT9C88yQSIMVOfto_wg_r6SE5VMUbP68WN7buvEEIKnIh9XrnyypkS3XYBgKAB7O8qzCQBwOoB6a-G9gHAQ&sig=AOD64_2vMRB0l9DlmXLTP5RIpugkpF2iIg&clui=1&rct=j&q=waste management fy6&ved=0ahUKEwjmyIvArbjJAhVEOBoKHTaiAsoQ0QwIIA&adurl=

This has been working perfectly for 18 months.

After 13th October, this referral url data started to tail off to the point where I'm only seeing a handful with the querystring (conversions are still at the same level). All the referral url shows is https://www.google.co.uk.

The landing page url is showing the gclid querystring, but it is overstating compared to conversions. So I don't trust using this as the means to record quotes gleaned from Adwords. Adwords support say they have not made a wholesale change to this querystring.

You might say what's wrong with conversions. But this won't allow me to calculate a ROI - each quote will generate different values once a customer signs up.

The campaigns are set to autotag and there has been no changes that would affect this as far as I know.

Does anyone have an idea on what this could be?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

What kind of URLs are you using on your AdWords ads? Do you have any sort of URL tracking in place, like custom parameters or tracking templates? If you rely on Analytics referral traffic always behaving a particular way, you'll put yourself in a bind when any small thing in the system changes. If not, I recommend taking a look at this overview of URL tracking in AdWords (which has changed this year) to see if you can implement a more reliable system that suits your needs.

Hi Mike,

Personally, I find the query string in the referrer data to be an unreliable method of identifying AdWords traffic. You have auto-tagging turned on, so just look for the gclid name/value pair in the query string of the actual URL. If it's present, it's an AdWords click. If you need more detail, add variables to the query string with ValueTrack for keyword, ad, ad group, etc. That should allow you to calculate your ROI.

Best of Luck!
