Adwords Conversion Tracking Snippet - Major Discrepancy with Analytics

We migrated the entire site to Google Tag Manager, except for, unintentionally, our online appointment booking engine, which consists of 3 form pages on a subdomain. These 3 pages still use the asynchronous GA code, and the Adwords conversion tracking snippet which was added forever-ago is on the final confirmation page. (Tag assistant says Deprecated method used: '_setAllowHash')

So, the number of conversions recorded in Adwords via the script is twenty times that of the Goal in Google Analytics which records visits to the Goal URL.

I crawled the site and found a few random pages that still contain the google_conversion_id in it (left over from remarketing tags), but the Adwords conversion tracking code does not exist anywhere other than that appointment confirmation page.

Thoughts?

Thanks again for the guidance. We're moving over to GTM and will do away with the pixel all together.

Hi Smg,

It's important to notice that since you measuring the same goal but with different methods (adwords tracking and Ga url visualization), differences are expected, but 20x more is really a huge amount.

A few thinks that comes in mid:

- You have to make sure that there's no Adwords Tracking Pixel in any other page, specially the old ones
- If you setup Adwords Tracking once by Tag Manager, check if it is not on and specially if it have the correct triggering options
- Check if your Adwords code is not being fired at the wrong moment or even 2x or more on the same page

Adwords code itself shouldn't count that many conversions, unless there's something wrong with the code.

If you have Adwords and Analytics synced (or tagged urls), you can filter on Analytics traffic coming from Adwords, and check their conversion URL to check if the code isn't installed where it shouldn't be.

Hope it helps.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I used screaming frog to crawl the site and it did not detect the Adwords pixel anywhere else. It did though find the google_conversion_id on a few other pages.

That confirmation page also has a remarketing pixel that uses the same conversion ID, not sure if that makes a difference?

I requested that GTM be implemented on those pages ASAP and the old code commented out to see if the issue will resolve.

Don't know about screaming frog, but you need to take a look on those pages where "google_conversion_id" was found. Sometimes developers don't use the entire conversion tracking code provided by Google, and they just grab the pixel to be triggerd at a specific moment, and in this case it could point the page as a 'false-negative' (the page doesn't have the original pixel, but it triggers it anyway).

Remarketing pixel shouldn't create any problem with Adwords Conversion tracking.
