Ad Rank Calculation Error for re-branded websites

Hi,

I've discovered an Ad Rank Calculation Error for Re-branded websites or new domains within an existing adwords account;

When the very first domain in an Adwords account is introduced the adwords system has no problem at calculating the ad rank formula no matter what page position your text ads are being displayed on (which is correct), however if you ever change the initial domain within your account (for new branding or change of website) the Adwords system disables the accounts ad rank calculation facility for low page positioned ads/keywords.

It's as though the Adwords system places a minimum page requirement for the ad rank calculation to work on accounts which have had a change of domain.

I'm not 100% sure as yet what page position you need to be in for the ad rank calculation to work (as it did when the accounts very first domain was used) in order for the Adwords system to calculate ad rank correctly but it's looking like you require a PAGE position of 3 or higher before the ad rank calculation occurs. In effect your ads performance will not be taken into account unless you get to the page 3 threshold. If anyone else could confirm on this that would be great in addition could the adwords specialists take a look into this error?

I've raised a ticket so we'll see the outcome!

Thanks

Hello there;

I am not quite sure I fully understood your arguments; The  ad-rank calculation is no "hidden math" - It is the bid multiplied by the QS. However; there are some special cases: e.g to place your ad at one of the 3 top  positions, you need to meet a certain  threshold that Google does not disclose. on the other hand; If your ad-rank is too low you might find ad at the bottom of the page...Smiley Surprised

It's not that Ad Rank calculations don't happen, but just that when you change anything in an ad, it gets reentered into the system as a new ad and the Quality Score and hence rank gets recalculated.

When you go and change domains entirely, that Quality Score metric has to recalculate from scratch and that takes a bit of time.

Hi SCL,

Do you mean the Avg Position as shown in the UI? Low search volume keywords and keywords with no impressions will have no Avg Position.

Best of Luck!
