Shopify Users: Please Update Conversion Tags

Hi AdWords Community,

We were recently alerted of a Shopify update that may impact your conversion reporting if you are a Shopify user.

What changed?

To provide easier access to past orders, users are now able to re-visit their Shopify confirmation page.

What does this mean for your AdWords account?

Each time a user visits their confirmation page, your AdWords conversion tag will fire. This may lead to double counting of your conversion within AdWords. This can impact your ROI reporting and automated bid strategies.

How can you fix this?

This is actually a quick fix! All you need to do is update your conversion tags to include the Order ID. Please refer your web developer to these instructions for the proper setup of Order IDs: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/6386790

Order ID vs. Conversion “Count”

Adding an order ID to your tag is not the same as changing your “Count” setting to count one conversion per ad click. By adding an order ID, you avoid counting the same conversion twice, such as when someone re-opens a purchase confirmation page and one purchase would be counted as two conversions.

When you change your “Count” setting to one, you count only one conversion after an ad click, even if multiple conversions, such as multiple different purchases, resulted from the ad click.

So when should you use “Count” versus Order ID?

  • If you want to track one lead per ad click, change your count setting to “One.”
  • If you want to track every purchase a customer makes after an ad click, but want to make sure you don’t count the same purchase twice, add an order ID to your tag. Adding an order ID is the recommended option for purchases.

These changes will ensure that AdWords advertisers using Shopify (or similar platforms) are able to get the data they need to optimize their accounts and measure ROI properly.

I updated my conversion tracking code and it stopped tracking conversions. I'll paste the snippet of code below. Prior to this update our conversions were tracking fine.

<!-- Google Code for Purchase conversion Conversion Page -->
<script type="text/javascript">
/ <![CDATA[ /
var google_conversion_id = 959325472;
var google_conversion_language = "en";
var google_conversion_format = "3";
var google_conversion_color = "ffffff";
var google_conversion_label = "c9yZCNvM2F0QoMq4yQM";
var google_remarketing_only = false;

if (<%= orderId %>) {
var google_conversion_order_id = "<%= orderId %>";
}
/ ]]> /
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="//www.googleadservices.com/pagead/conversion.js">
</script>
<noscript>
<div style="display:inline;">
<img height="1" width="1" style="border-style:none;" alt="" src="//www.googleadservices.com/pagead/conversion/959325472/?label=c9yZCNvM2F0QoMq4yQM&amp;guid=ON&amp;oid=... orderId %>&amp;script=0"/>
</div>
</noscript>
<!-- END Google Code for Purchase conversion Conversion Page -->

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Drew,

If this is the exact code you have on your site, it looks like it was double implemented instead of replaced (or perhaps you pasted it twice when you were posting).

The next step I would recommend is to make sure you didn't skip over steps 1-4 in this article. I also suggest running a test conversion and using the Tag Assistant Chrome extension to test if the tag is firing. If it is not firing correctly, the extension will tell you what the issue is.

If you are still stuck, please go ahead and give the AdWords team a call and they will be able to help troubleshoot further!

Hope this helps,
Cassie

Hi Drew,

What order ID value ended up working for you?

Would you mind posting the code snippet that worked?

Cheers,

Patrick

{{ order.order_number }} should be the correct variable to use in the snippet, see https://help.shopify.com/themes/liquid/objects/order#order-order_number

You'd have to add it to your tag in three places like so:

<!-- Google Code for Purchase Conversion Page -->
    <script type="text/javascript">
    /* <![CDATA[ */
    var google_conversion_id = 1234567890;
    var google_conversion_language = "en_US";
    var google_conversion_format = "1";
    var google_conversion_color = "666666";
    var google_conversion_label = "xxx-XXx1xXXX123X1xX";
     if ({{ order.order_number }}) {
         var google_conversion_order_id = "{{ order.order_number }}";
    }
    /* ]]> */
    </script>
    <script type="text/javascript"
    src="//www.googleadservices.com/pagead/conversion.js">
    </script>
    <noscript>
    <img height=1 width=1 border=0
    src="//www.googleadservices.com/pagead/conversion/1234567890/
    ?label=xxx-XXx1xXXX123X1xX&amp;guid=ON&amp;oid={{ order.order_number }}&amp;script=0">
    </noscript>
    </body>
