My competition had created a page on their site to rank my legal trade name.

My competition had created a page on their site to rank my legal trade name. it caused a google search to return a page with their web address rather than mine. They were doing this to most of their competitors, as well as myself.

My lawyer explained this is illegal as my trade name is legally registered.

How do I get the lost ad dollars back?

This is a legal issue of using  your trade name without your permission  on a web site. I don't think this is an AdWords (google advertising platform) issue.

With AdWords you can request that nobody uses your trademark in their ad copy, but that's all.
