Tracking template and URL redirects

Hi,

I've been trying to set up and wrap my head around the tracking templates and using a 3rd party tracking solution.

From reading the documentation in https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/6273460?hl=en it suggests that you are allowed a cross domain redirect, as long as it redirects to the final URL. If this is the case, I can't understand why, every time I add a tracking template with a redirect, I get a Final URL mismatch.

Here's my Final URL:

http://hello.squirrel.me/MoneySavingApp

I have a tracking URL:

http://squirrel.app.link/e/MoneySavingApp

that redirects to:

http://hello.squirrel.me/MoneySavingApp

In theory this should work. My question is:

  1. Should this work or is my understanding wrong?
  2. How do I debug this? I've played with multiple combinations and can't figure out why it thinks it doesn't match.

Thanks,

Jason

Hey Jason,

Great question.

Can you include a screenshot showing the template url in AdWords? I'd like to see exactly how it's set up in AdWords so that I can help you troubleshoot this.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Thanks for the response. This is the simplified version of an ad I'm trying to set up (removing all the URL params from the tracking template to make sure this isn't breaking anything).

This has a copy of the tracking template - is this what you needed? https://www.evernote.com/l/AFHwMF6LvbdIE5bP4qPsPbZdfScpnAVN3L8

Thanks,

Jason

Thanks, Jason.

That's odd. I experimented on my end, and I see the same mismatch error. I don't see any issues with your logic, based the examples of acceptable tracking templates that Google provides.

I recommend reaching out to Google support about this.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

John

Just an update on this. I spoke to Google who told me that our tracking provider (branch.io) was basically doing something that the Google bot didn't like, which meant the final URL was mismatching.

I spoke to Branch who said that I had to add a variable to their tracking ($fallback_url=final_url) to make sure it didn't throw the bot off. This seems to have done the trick and it's now working as expected.

Thanks,

Jason
