Suspended Ad / Disapproved Ad
Here is an interesting scenario:
My company is a police supply company and we sell items like pepper spray, expandable batons, and holsters for duty weapons. We created an ad nearly a year ago and it was suspended because the ad linked to our home page which showed pictures of said pepper spray, expandable batons and holsters. The Google operator told us to remove all pictures of those items and re-submit, which we did. Our ad was again disapproved because we had a picture of the handle of a gun in the duty holster. At that time, we decided to revamp our website and re-submit it later.
Fast forward to now and we tried again to use Google Adwords but, again, we were denied. In fact, we spoke with 4 different operators who stated "your website does not comply with our guidelines of showing dangerous weapons". So, we did a cursory search of "police supplies" and found that there are a BUNCH of companies using Google Adwords to advertise the exact same items that we were trying to advertise.
We called Google back and asked them why companies like Galls, Walmart, Quartermaster, Chief Supply, Rotcho, Tactical Gear and so on, were able to place ads (verified by one of the operators we spoke to) and they all have pictures of pepper spray, holsters, and expandable batons. We did not mind being denied the advertising but was curious why other companies were allowed to do it. We still have no answer. We have been put off over and over again by operators who tell us that they will forward our complaint and we should hear something within 72 ours. But, we never do. In fact, we called them back and was told "Sorry, the person handling your complaint no longer works here."
We KNOW what the Google policy is because it has been told to us over and over again. What we don't know is why some companies are allowed to advertise on Adwords and some companies are not when they sell the same products? I would venture to say that those other companies pay a ton more for advertising than our small company does....maybe? At the end of the day, we have families to feed, too.
Thank you for any feedback!
Re: Suspended Ad / Disapproved Ad
Hello @Michael H
This topic was extensively discussed last year when the Policy 2.0 was introduced. Your frustration was shared by several advertisers in a number of discussions.
Run a search on the community for "weapons" and "Weapons Policy" and you'll find several discussions.
