Electronic Cigarettes

I know  that there has been a discussion about this but I can't find a direct answer from Google.

When electronic cigarettes have been proven to reduce the harmful effects of smoking, why are they banned from Adwords.

Patches, gum and inhalers are all an alternative way of getting nicotine into your system and they're allowed on adwords.

Electronic cigarettes are no different in that respect; they are just another way of delivering nicotine into your body.  Especially compare with the inhalers where you still have the ritualistic hand to mouth action plus you're still getting nicotine.

I just don't understand why electronic cigarettes should be treated differently.  If they were called electronic nicotine inhalers would the policy be different or is it the demon word 'cigarette' which is tarring electronic cigarettes with the same brush as tobacco based products?

I'd love to hear and answer straight from Google about this.

Regards

Hi Andy,

I'm afraid that you're probably not going to get much in response to why the policies are set the way they are.

You're more likely to get pointed to this policy:

Hello Any; Welocme;

Here is a link to the discussion;

https://www.en.adwords-community.com/t5/Ad-Approvals-and-Advertising/Policy-violations-ignored-by-ad...

In any case, as Tom mentioned, we cannot get into the reasoning / logic of Google Policy decision-making. Sometime, some expansion is given on the official Blog. There are times where we disagree with Google. However, the moment a Policy decision is taken, and a Policy clause is in effect - we MUST follow.

Google is anti human. It's ok if you want e cigarettes and an alternative to the  anti human monopoly based search engines. Its time we jump this ship and go encourage Start Page to start their own advertising program  that allows e cig advertisements. At least then we can all band together and be free from the Phillip Morris supporting big tobacco lobbyist big pharma supporting Google , who is notorious for screwing the little guy while the monsters eat up everything there is. They don't encourage free trade as they think the web is theirs to monitor. Well we can show them it isn't real fast.

It's going to be a grand day when this pile of censorship trash is nothing but a has been but hopefully never will be .. Seriously  Don't Be Evil , DO sell and support nicotine based patches and gums that nobody is interested in that only support big pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers and DO NOT have critical thinking groups of individuals who are capable of making decision based on the facts presented to them such as google.

Even Web MD released and article recently with detailed reports and extensive tests done about how the levels of nicotine in E-Cigarettes are a fraction of cigarettes , gums, and even patches and have no cardiac effects what so ever.

It's sad because I have been smoke free for over 2 years thanks to an E cigarette and I don't even use the E cigarette any more . Fact is Google is anti human and can be thanked partly for the trendy, communist, anti humanist,technocratic, agenda attitude we are facing as a civilization , they are ruining free trade and the ability for people to prosper off what they truly believe is a viable healthier alternative, if not for the cessation device alone.

Shame on google , don't be evil . Don't be anti human ....

It's unfortunate that your account has been suspended because I can contest that E-ciggerates work! I haven't coughed up any flem in over a year and when I do my Mixed Martial Arts and Kickboxing I feel like I have more energy due to not having the nicotine in my system.

It's very unfortunate why the rules are setup the way that they are.

Hi All,

Here's an update:

This issue has been escalated to the policy specialists and ads in violation of the policy have been taken down. Also necessary changes have been made to disallow variations of the terms in question.

Thanks for your feedback and patience,
Mini

Check out cigazon.com, a new website inviting vendors and affiliates to upload and promote their products in an amazon like electronic cigarette mall.

Okay so electronic cigarettes as an industry comes in three flavours (if you'll pardon the pun)  The first is the units themselves. These are electronic devices, they are batteries and atomisers, both of which are perfectly okay to advertise and have no moral, ethical or health issue associated with them. They are gadgets if you will, and have no nicotine, no oil, just a battery and an atomiser...and perhaps a charging unit. They are essentially tiny electric kettles.

Essentially the difference would be the same as advertising an iphone, as opposed to an app for an iphone that hacked someones computer... the former is okay, the latter not so much.

The next is propolene glycerine with flavouring but with no nicotine and are very popular especially in the Gourmet oils industry. Again this is  afoodstuff, and acceptd asa foodstuff even by the FDA.

Lastly are tobacco oils which do contain nictoine...

I'm not sure why a piece of technology which is itself not a cigarette, looks nothing like a cigarette and contains no consumable material is banned by google in adwords. Given that the latest scientific evidence avaialble points to efficacy of these machines in helping smokers to stop and that this is a 'side effect' of their use, not their designed use is there any reason for this.

I could understand if an online vendor was also selling nicotine products... but I don't understand such a policy if the online vendor exclusively sells only the electronic machines?

Oddly vendors from china which sell low quality oils and machines have no issue getting their ads accepted even though they sell more e-cigarettes from their one website than are sold across the entire continental United States.

Mini,

Would I be right in assuming from the offical policy from Google adwords that it is perfectly okay at least according to the stated policy  to advertise counter ads to Gum Patches and Plasters?

So long as the landing page discusses these and not electronic cigarettes and so long as the words 'electronic cigarettes' and derivations therof are not used in targeted key phrases?

In such a case its okay for an electronnic cigarette vendor to advertsie a landing page that discusses the efficacy of Gum and patches from say a sceintific perspective? And discusses studies that outline that efficacty?

Hello there;

This is an old discussion, and you rather open a new one...

In any case I think that the language of the Policy quite expilicit:

Google AdWords doesn't allow the promotion of most tobacco or tobacco-related products. The promotion of tobacco or tobacco-related products includes cigarettes, cigars, tobacco pipes, rolling papers, electronic cigarettes, and e-cigarette cartridges

Tobacco/cigarette alternatives

 Not allowed
Google doesn't allow the promotion of tobacco alternatives or cigarette alternatives, such as cigarettes that contain no tobacco and electronic cigarettes, even if promoted as an aid to quit smoking.

Products for quitting smoking, such as plasters, patches, gums  Allowed
Google allows the promotion of products for quitting smoking, such as plasters, patches, and gum.
