Custom paremeter - invalid character in custom parameter key

The below link sites that the custom parameter name will accept the characters I wish to use:

https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/6325879?hl=en

Here is the relevant excerpt:

Custom parameters consist of two parts: Name: Up to 16 alphanumeric characters Value: Up to 200 characters; can contain any characters (including & | ; _ / ^ ( !), as well as ValueTrack parameters Both the name and the value can be anything you want. For example, if you have special IDs for each of your keywords, you can create a custom parameter that looks like this: {_mykwid}=1234.

However, when I want to us a parameter name in the first text box {_textbox}:

my_param

I get the error "Invalid character in customer parameter key".

If I modify the name to:

myparam

the error goes away.

The problem is I absolutely need the "_" for other reasons--and the instructions from google says it's okay.

Any thoughts?
