Character limit if single-width and double-width characters are mixed

Hello,

we came up with a question where we could not find an answer to it and the Live Chat wasn't able to answer it for sure.

If you mix single width and double width characters in one line, for example a Description line, single-width characters are counted half in the interface so two single-width characters are counted as one.

For example the word iPhone will be counted as 3 characters instead of 6. We, for example, have a line that has 18 characters,if you count every character as one. 9 of this characters are single-width characters, the remaining ones are double-width Korean characters so the AdWords interface shows me that I have 4 characters left.

The lady from the Live Chat could not confirm that the counting of the AdWords interface is correct in this case and that it's possible that Google doesn't approve this Ads.

Is there somebody who has already added ads with both single and double-width characters where the string length is over the double wide limit but the interface counter shows it within the character limit and can confirm that the counting of the AdWords interface is correct, so the ads will be approved by Google?

Thank you so much!

Best Regards,

Christian

Hi Christian,

Thanks for your question. This is very interesting. I would like to double check with a specialist if that's alright. Once I see what my language expert says I will let you know.

Ok Christian my expert says the following:

You are right and the ads will be approved (as long as the ads follow all the other AdWords policy.)

The character limit policy (17 characters for double-width, 35 for single-width) is applicable only when you use one type of characters and do not mix double and single width characters.

Basically a double-width character is equivalent to two single-width characters.

For example, 17 double-width characters is equivalent to 34 single-width characters.

Thus, while an ad text with "18 double-width characters" (= 36 single-width characters) is not allowed, "17 double-width characters and 1 single-width character" or "16 double-width characters and 3 single-width character" etc are fine with our policy.

Hope it helps!
