Advertising a social network for pokerplayers through adwords?

Hi,

I have a shortterm successful social network for pokerplayers. I am looking to expand and was thinking that Adwords could be a help for that.

The website does NOT advertise any gambling-related material. In fact there will be no adverts on the website - it is simply a social network for pokerplayers. The community members do of course talk about poker, but it is of course strictly forbidding to advertise or talk about pokerrooms. Will this site get approved for the adwords policy?

Hello isnickfromspace;

This is a nice question;

To my knowledge the answer is that you cannot promote this type of website;

Google prohibits the promotion of gambling and gambling related products

Gambling-related products include:

  • Gambling-related promotional products such as gambling-related vouchers, bonus codes, etc.
  • Gambling-related tutoring and educational materials such as books and e-books
  • Gambling-related information such as tips, odds, handicapping, and sports picks

Hi MosheTLV,

I am aware of the policy, but I do not feel that a social network fits under the subcategories, or that it "promotes" gambling of any way. It is simply a platform to bring people together.

Again, there will be no advertisements, no vouchers, bonuscodes, no tutoring, books, tips or such on the website.

The policy is kind of vague on this point, which is why I would like to get it confirmed Smiley Happy

If I would apply for a gambling license in each target-contries, they would obviously say that one isn't needed for a social platform.

I guess its a grey zone, which is why it would be great to get a clear yes/no from a Google employee

Poker is only related to gambling when there is betting involved with materialistic items. You can simply play a game of poker without betting materialistic items, we use to do it all the time in the Military. This was straight orders from our superior officers that if gambling was involved that we would be punished. So we made it a point to do it for fun before lights out.

If you want to gamble you must go to a licensed casino.

Just to clarify, I just got off the phone with the Hard Rock Indian Casino in Tampa and they confirmed that Poker is not gambling when you are not betting with items. Next on my list is 1-888-ADMIT-IT which is an organization that is setup to help people with gambling addictions and problems. I'll be back to post my findings regarding this issue.

After being on hold for about 20 minutes I finally got on the phone with a member of 1-888-ADMIT-IT and they have also confirmed that if you are not betting on items / money that it is not considered gambling.

This could be tricky because it is considered a grey area but I would suspect that Google would follow best practices when it comes to gambling. If a licensed Casino and also a gambling organization both state that it is not considered gambling, I don't see why Google wouldn't follow these practices as well. Hopefully you can get an answer from Google Adwords before submitting your ads for approval.

Best of luck Smiley Happy

Hi Isnickfromspace,

Nothing is stopping you from contacting Google directly to ask them prior to launching your campaigns.  They're the only voice that matters here.  I would contact support ASAP and have them check on your site.

Yep, contact them and hopefully you will get a straight answer that will help you move forward with your campaigns. In my opinion, I think it should be allowed as long as you are not promoting gambling but that could be difficult because it's a social networking site where other users could post information that would be considered against Adwords policy.

I actually thought -this in here- was the support forum for any adwords-related questions and google employees would respond here? Smiley Happy

HAHA, yea you would think that they would but they are too busy trying to figure out who plays next in their daily ping pong tournaments. Just do a search and you will find plenty of users who think customer support needs to be enhanced. Just call adwords support and maybe you will get lucky... no pun intended Smiley Happy
