Ad Text & Keywords Policies Seriously Hobbling Legitimate Orgs

So livid right now.  I have a 501(C)(3) non-profit and just got an ad rejected.

While I completely understand Google's desire to combat 'miracle cure' claims - we do that all day long - I find it incredibly ignorant that AdWords policy analysts cannot see a rather glaring difference between the people who actually are working on cure research and combatting the snake oil salesmen... and the shysters themselves.

When someone gets diagnosed, they run straight to Google and it's pretty obvious what they'll type in that little search box: "Cure for Herpes"(or HSV, HPV, etc).  Google's policy makes it far less likely that they'll find legitimate organizations and far more likely that they'll end up clicking on the mountains of garbage out there.  (Unlike the snake oil companies, legitimate organizations don't mention cures in every other sentence on their websites, so it's impossible to win the SEO/SEM search wars.  We need Google's help, both in search and in advertising.

I sent en email explaining all this, of course, and pointing out how, on top of getting our asses kicked by the ocean of snake oil sites out there in Google search results, that YouTube has countless miracle cure videos posted, upon which we are forced to spend a huge amount of time and effort to combat.  I noted that I'd like to speak with someone to address the issue and discuss an exception for legitimate organizations.

And what do I get in return?

  • A phone call
  • From some clown in India
  • On my #&$%ing cell phone.  (Seriously. Google not afford to have them call fro a toll-free US #?)

I'm not sure how he thought he was going to solve my problem, aside from racking up my cell bill, while re-reading the email AdWords already sent to me over the phone and arguing about how I should just go ahead and change the ad so I can get it approved.

It's not that hard to understand that if legitimate organizations are permitted to use key phrases, while shady ones are not, people will end up with the right information and support, rather than all the wrong information, an empty wallet and quite possibly a medical bill after having poisoned themselves.

Our ad certainly doesn't claim we have a cure, nor do we even sell anything; it says we're supporting those who are looking for one.  Is Susan G Komen barred from mentioning finding a cure for breast cancer, too?  The whole thing is just ridiculous.

My question, then, is this: "To whom might we appeal in order to knock some sense into AdWords?"  To work together on combating the shysters, rather than being hobbled, by Google (and their various subsidiaries), from helping as many people as we could?  If Google really wanted to make a difference, they'd give proven, legitimate research and charitable organizations an exclusive on the very set of keywords and phrases people will obviously type into their search box.  I've no doubt that with a modicum of training and vetting, a Lead AdWords Policy Analyst could discern the difference between the two types of organizations.  I'm quite certain that any legitimate organization would be happy to fill out an application, too.  I know we'd be all over it.  Working together, we could eradicate much of the fallacious garbage and ignorance out there on the web.

So, got any contacts?  Any ideas welcome!

Hi Christian,

I'm sorry to hear of the problems you are having getting your adverts approved. Your situation sounds quite unique and I would recommend calling the Google AdWords team directly on 1-866-2GOOGLE (1-866-246-6453) and asking for a manual review of your case.

Also, I know this may seem like a silly question, but have you heard of Google Ad Grants?

https://www.google.co.uk/grants/ - Google will provide your non-profit organisation with $10,000 per month in Google AdWords credit.

I hope that's of some help and that you get a resolution to your problem soon!

All the best,
Spike

Hi Christian F,
As +MattyRocketMil suggested, do reach out to the AdWords team and ask for a manual review. These restrictions do happen but a manual review often clears up the situation and gets the ads approved and running in short order.

Beyond the phone number already provided you can also reach them via a number of ways listed on this page: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/8206?hl=en&hlrm=en

Lastly, for the security of your account, you should edit it to remove the account number.

All the best,

Thanks so much! Sorry if I over-vented. It's just incredibly frustrating. Yes, I have heard of Ad Grants and have yet to look into it, but I'll definitely get on that once I get this sorted out. That would do wonders for the cause in regard to educating the public and raising awareness.

75% of the population are contagious carriers of HSV and "maybe" 10% of them know it. We just want to educate people, so that they aren't blindsided by the diagnosis (of themselves or a partner) of something completely endemic to humans. Far too much ignorance out there. The stigma surrounding HSV and HPV shouldn't even exist. Very few get through life without acquiring both. That should be common knowledge, but it isn't.

Hi Christian,
No worries about "over-venting". It is understandable and just shows you are passionate about your organization.

Certainly look into Google Ad Grants - it is a great program for nonprofits. As A nonprofit based in the US, your first step would be to sign up at http://www.google.com/nonprofits

Google has done a great job of making the signup process simple and straight forward so that it is quick and easy for nonprofits to apply.

If you run into any issues while applying, just follow back up in the Ad Grants Help Forum: https://www.en.adwords-community.com/t5/Ad-Grants/bd-p/adgrants
